Making Space For Creativity
Two weeks back at Circus Smirkus, the traveling youth circus where I got my start as a performer over 20 years ago has rejuvenated my creative spirit in a major way! Smirkus is an international youth circus program that tours New England every summer in a big-top tent. I did 6 summers with Smirkus beginning when I was 12, and returned this year as choreographer for their 2024 touring show.
Being a part of an artistic process again reminded me how important it is to make space for creativity, which is ultimately about making space for play. And there is nothing like a kids circus to remind you how important play is. Now, before you tell yourself that "I'm not an artist," I encourage you to open your mind and consider the ways you might be able to create more space for play/creativity in your life. Here are three books I recommend to help you unlock your inner artist:
Across all three of these books, you'll find the common theme that creativity is a life force as important as eating, sleeping, and loving. It feeds our souls, and it's a practice we have to make space for an nurture. It doesn't just happen, we have to create space for it, and it's not just for a select few people, it’s for all of us. When we make space for play, our lives shine a little brighter. I'm feeling that more than ever and excited to share that bright energy with you!
